Match Report: New Ash Green 1st XV vs Whitstable 1st XV

Andrew Huey8 Sep 2024 - 09:38

Setting the tone for what promises to be a competitive season.

Whitstable kicked off proceedings, immediately pressuring New Ash Green (NAG) as an early fumble from an NAG player resulted in a lineout deep in their territory. From the ensuing lineout, Whitstable executed a well-rehearsed backs move, breaking through NAG's defensive line. However, a couple of handling errors allowed NAG to recover possession, leading to a breakaway try against the run of play, which was duly converted to give NAG an early 7-0 lead.

Undeterred by the setback, Whitstable responded with sustained pressure, dominating both possession and field position. Their persistence paid off when Captain Ben Cliff crossed the line twice, showcasing excellent team play. Fly-half Andrew Huey converted one of these tries, pushing Whitstable into the lead at 12-7.

Despite Whitstable's dominance, NAG struck back with another breakaway try, again against the flow of the game, and converted it to regain a narrow lead at 14-12. But Whitstable quickly regained their composure, improving ball retention and cutting out handling errors. Their discipline was rewarded as winger James Garland touched down after a sweeping move, followed by second-row Matt Hall crashing over for another try. Whitstable went into halftime with a solid 22-14 lead.

The second half mirrored much of the first, with Whitstable controlling the tempo and dictating play. However, it was a more defensive period, with fewer scoring opportunities for both sides. Fly-half Andrew Huey extended Whitstable's lead early in the half with a well-struck penalty, making it 25-14.

Both teams traded possession for much of the second half, but it was Whitstable’s number 8, Lewis Remington, who sealed the victory, powering over the line for a try five minutes before the final whistle. Huey missed the conversion, but the result was already beyond doubt.

Final Thoughts: Whitstable’s strong pre-season form carried over into this opening match of the season, as they combined tactical dominance with strong teamwork. Their ability to cut out early mistakes and maintain pressure on NAG throughout the game made the difference. Despite two breakaway tries from NAG, Whitstable’s control of possession and territory ensured a comfortable 30-14 victory. All 18 players contributed to a well-rounded team performance, setting the tone for what promises to be a competitive season.
